Erik ten Hag wants to change how contracts are handed out at Manchester United.

A lot of things need to change at Manchester United and one of the main problems is our contract policy. We have squad players on crazy money – sums they wouldn’t earn elsewhere — and it makes it difficult to move them on in the transfer window.

That said, I think it is encouraging to hear that the new manager wants to address this issue.

According to James Ducker of the Telegraph newspaper, Ten Hag has told the club’s hierarchy not to dish out any new contracts until he has determined who warrants them.

Manchester United players coming to the end of their contract in 2023

  • Marcus Rashford – option to extend by 1 year
  • Luke Shaw – option to extend by 1 year
  • Diogo Dalot – option to extend by 1 year
  • Cristiano Ronaldo – option to extend by 1 year
  • Fred – option to extend by 1 year
  • David de Gea – option to extend by 1 year
  • Axel Tuanzebe
  • Martin Dubravka – option to buy
  • Alejandro Garnacho
  • Phil Jones – option to extend by 1 year
  • Tom Heaton – option to extend by 1 year

Ducker’s recent article states that United’s players and staff have been encouraged to rip each other during an inquest into their derby performance.

However, it will be interesting to see if United intervene or ignore Ten Hag because they may feel certain players have greater commercial value than others.

We must remember that the Glazers still own Manchester United and they will continue to hold us back. Ten Hag somehow needs to work his magic around them but sorting the contract policy at Old Trafford is a must!
