The mental strength of the Manchester City squad is arguably their most underestimated ability. To back up season after season to challenge for major honours is just as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. But it’s this ability that sees Pep Guardiola’s squad only 6 wins away from a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

After winning 5 of the past 6 Premier League titles, it would have been natural to see the Manchester City squad sit back and marvel at their achievements. That especially could have been the case after last season’s treble winning heroics. But that isn’t in the Manchester City squad’s makeup. Instead, they have backed up yet again to put themselves within touching distance of a fourth consecutive Premier League title. While they are in a tight title race with the Liverpool and Arsenal their title destiny is in their hands. It is a chance at a piece of history that may never come around again for Pep Guardiola’s team. The fact that they have put themselves in such a position again this season is a testament to the mental strength of the City squad.

Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of City’s crucial Premier League clash with Brighton Pep Guardiola praised the ability of his squad to keep backing up every season. He told the media: “Science says you need a certain time to recover. In many things, not just physicality but mentally too.bFor many years, we haven’t given it to them. But still, we are there, and I’m really impressed. I think we will fall down, this time it will not be possible and still they make it possible. I will reflect my period here, always I will admire these types of players. They find a way to still be there. This is unbelievable.”

Amongst all of their achievements and dazzling football, the mental strength of the Manchester City squad is often overlooked. But it is one of the major strengths of Pep Guardiola’s squad. Without it, the remarkable feats they have achieved wouldn’t have been possible. They will also need to call on it again as they attempt to claim a fourth consecutive Premier League title this season.
