Aston Villa supporter and Hollywood star Tom Hanks has fired a joke about Manchester United at Julia Robert’s expense.

Fellow A-list Roberts is a United fan and she discussed her support for the team when appearing alongside Hanks on Friday’s episode of The Graham Norton Show.

“I’ve been to Old Trafford, I’m a true fan,” Roberts said, as per The Mirror. “I have three children and when they were really little and started playing soccer and started watching it on TV. And I didn’t ever realise how exciting it was to watch it on television. We just got so into it and somehow Manchester united just became our team, the Moder (her husband’s surname) family team. And we became sort of possessed.”

Hanks was quick to interrupt with a dig at United, saying: “Anybody can root for Man United!”

Roberts replied: “Oh, that’s not cool.”

I don’t think Hanks has been paying much attention to football over the past 10 years because there has been a several hard times for the Reds. It’s not like this season has been a walk in the park.

Hanks was then asked how he got into supporting Villa. He said: “When I first came to England the football scores were on the BBC and they had all kooky names. And then Aston Villa, I thought, ‘That sounds like a lovely place. Oh yes, I’m taking a holiday to Aston Villa, would you like to join?’

“Turns out it’s in Birmingham which is a fabulous place! Villa Park is a magnificent stadium to go to.”

Villa have started the 2022/23 campaign stronger than United as they sit fourth in the Premier League, with four more points than the Reds after 13 matches.
