Tom Huddlestone could be set to start his coaching career at Manchester United.

Manchester United are in talks with Tom Huddlestone over a role at the club where he will be playing with the U21s, according to the Telegraph.

This news comes after Benni McCarthy joined United as a first-team coach.

At the age of 35, Huddlestone will be allowed to play as an over-aged player in the Premier League 2 – like Paul McShane last season.

Clubs in Premier League 2 are allowed five over-aged players and one goalkeeper.

Mike McGrath and James Ducker report: “United have been looking for a replacement for Paul McShane, who was hybrid coach-player until hanging up his boots this summer, and have turned to Huddlestone who had eight seasons with Tottenham Hotspur and also played in the Premier League with Hull City.”

McShane’s playing career came to an end in May when the former Republic of Ireland defender announced his retirement, as per ManUtd.com. The 36-year-old will work as a Manchester United Academy coach to help with the U18s and U23s.

Unlike academy graduate McShane, Huddlestone doesn’t have any connections to United, but his experience could still prove key to the development of our youth players.

Huddlestone left Hull City at the end of last season and has been looking for a route into coaching. This is a fantastic opportunity for him to work with some of the most talented youngsters in England.
