Italy international Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct by the English FA having allegedly placed bets 50 times on football matches after his transfer from Milan.

The English FA has released a fresh statement on Italy international Tonali, who was handed a 10-month ban by the FIGC Prosecutor in October 2023. The ex-Milan midfielder has officially been charged with misconduct by the FA, so there could be more trouble for him.

“Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules,” a statement reads.

“It’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023. Sandro Tonali has until 5 April 2024 to respond.”

What does the FA statement mean?

The statement released by the FA means Tonali allegedly continued placing bets on football matches following his transfer to Milan, but he stopped after the beginning of a FIGC investigation, which led to a 10-month ban, effective October 27, 2023.

Tonali is expected to return to action on August 27, 2024.

Newcastle promptly released their own official statement, which reads: “Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations, and he retains the club’s full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan in a deal believed to be worth €80m, including add-ons, last summer. He scored one goal in 12 appearances with the Magpies before his suspension. Due to this ban, Tonali won’t be eligible for Italy at Euro 2024 this summer.
