Additional factors to be considered here are that this is not about lump sums leaving one bank account and hitting another this week. Serge Aurier’s £70,000 wages have been removed from the salary bill, which is worth some £3.6m per annum. Bryan Gil’s (who is 20) future as a starting XI player remains to be seen. Emerson Royal looks like a fascinating prospect as he was a regular starter for Real Betis.
As far as the squad is concerned, the midfield is vulnerable to injury. If Skipp or Hojbjerg were to pick up an injury, then we are staring at Harry Winks again.
There is still no backup striker to Harry Kane, whose future beyond next January looks far from clear. In his statement, he specifically said he was staying for the summer.
