Celtic Football Club has announced the signing of South Korean internationalist, Hyeongyu Oh, who has joined the Scottish Champions on a five-year deal, subject to the usual international clearance formalities. The 21-year-old forward joins from K League 1 club, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, where he has played since 2019.
Ange Postecoglou is clearly delighted at bringing the striker to the club.
“We are delighted to bring Oh to Celtic,” the Celtic manager said. “He is a young, talented striker with great attributes and someone who is ready to take the next stage in his career – a player who is hungry, eager to develop and to achieve success.
“I have watched Oh for some time and he is the striker I really wanted as I think he will be a great fit in our squad. Really importantly, I know that he had his heart set on joining us too and that his own perseverance has been crucial in making this deal happen, so his determination to join Celtic has been very clear.
“We are really pleased to welcome him to the Club and look forward to working with him and settling him into our squad.”
It’s a move that Hyeongyu Oh has dreamt about, and it’s one that has now become a reality for the South Korean striker, who scored 14 goals in the calendar year of 2022 for Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the K-League. As one of the league’s top players last year, the 21-year-old was also awarded his first international cap in November.
Now as a Celtic player, he can’t wait to get started and experience Paradise for the first time. Speaking exclusively to Celtic TV, Oh has completed his Welcome to Celtic interview:
“I’m happy to be playing at one of the top clubs and I’m delighted that my dream has come true,” Oh said. “I feel like I’m on a movie set and I’m really excited to be in the city and I’m looking forward to the upcoming days. This is the moment I have dreamed of and I’m really excited to perform in front of the fans at the stadium.”
Oh is not the first South Korean to play for the Hoops, with Ki Sung-Yeung and Cha Du-Ri both having had successful spells with the club in the early 2010s. Celtic’s new striker is delighted to be following in their footsteps and he also wants to follow in their title-winning success.
“I’m a very aggressive player who also likes the physical side and I like to score lots of goals. One of my aims is to score a lot of goals and I also have ambitions of winning the league championship.
“Ki Sung-Yeung and Cha Du-Ri are two of the players I respect the most. I have seen them playing for Celtic and I’m now happy to have the Celtic badge on my chest and to be working with the team on its goals.”
