Turkish soccer player killed 5-year-old son

Turkish footballer Cevher Toktas, who most recently featured for Bursa Yildirimspor in the Turkish Regional Amateur League, has admitted to killing his five-year-old son.

As explained by Emma Smith of Goal.com, Kasim, Toktas' son, was hospitalized on April 23 while showing coronavirus symptoms. Gabriel Fernandez of CBS Sports wrote Kasim tested negative for the virus.

Later that day, Toktas informed doctors his son's condition had deteriorated. Kasim died after a brief stint in intensive care.

While Kasim's passing was originally linked with the coronavirus, that changed when his father turned himself in to authorities on May 4.

Per Goal.com, Toktas admitted in a statement given to the Bursa Office of the Prosecutor that he suffocated his child with a pillow before crying out to doctors to clear himself of any suspicion.

Toktas added in the statement:

"I never loved my younger son after he was born. I don’t know why I don’t love him. The sole reason why I killed him that day is because I didn’t like him. I don’t have any mental issues."

Per CBS Sports, no trial date has yet been set.
