USMNT, Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie tests positive for COVID-19

Serie A giants Juventus may have a coronavirus outbreak to worry about in the closing stages of the international break.

Juventus announced on Wednesday that United States Men's National Team midfielder Weston McKennie tested positive for COVID-19. The 22-year-old returned a positive result one day after superstar Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive while with Portugal on international duty.

Because of what's known about incubation periods, it's possible McKennie and Ronaldo were exposed to the same infection source.

"In compliance with the regulations and the protocol, the team entered into fiduciary isolation this evening," Juventus explained in an official club statement. "This procedure will allow all persons negative to the controls to carry out regular training and match activities, but will not allow contact with people outside of the group."

Juve added in a separate statement that Ronaldo has returned to Italy and is currently isolating. Two members of the club's U23 side, a player and a staffer, are also isolating after testing positive.

As ESPN explained, all Serie A players who test positive for the coronavirus must quarantine for a minimum of 14 days and return negative test results before they're cleared to resume footballing activities.

Both McKennie and Ronaldo will miss Saturday's league match versus Crotone and Tuesday's Champions League group stage game against Dynamo Kiev. From there, Juventus host Hellas Verona on Oct. 25 before a Champions League showdown with Lionel Messi and Barcelona on Oct. 28.

It's unknown if either man will be available to face Barca.
