Michael Carrick has had his say on Erik ten Hag.
We all know that Erik ten Hag will need time to implement his style and turn things around at Manchester United. There are lots of issues to fix and the Glazer family are not going to suddenly become good owners overnight.
I’m sure Michael Carrick has a few stories about dealings with certain members of the club’s hierarchy and he knows better than most that United have not had any real structure in recent years. In turn, it’s made the managerial job a lot more challenging.
United travel to Thailand next week for the start of their pre-season tour and it looks like Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia will be joining them as a new signing.
Ten Hag has targeted players he knows, including three from Ajax and Frenkie De Jong, who he previously had in Amsterdam. There’s nothing wrong with that in theory but at least John Murtough is listening to the manager’s demands.
Speaking about Ten Hag’s appointment for the first time publicly, Carrick could give more insight than before because he was United’s caretaker manager for 11 days after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal.
“Hopefully they can get a good start to the season and kick on, it’ll be interesting to see how it goes,” Carrick told Sky Sports. “I think [Ten Hag]’s just got to do what he does, he’s proved it at Ajax and in his coaching career he’s got strong beliefs and his teams play a certain way. I’m looking forward to seeing that.
“As I say, I hope they get a good start to the season. If you get a good start to the season you can get momentum from there. I think when you’re talking top four, you want to be right up there, of course, you do. You want to be challenging.
“At the start of every season for Man United, you want to be trying to win trophies and win the league, so I’m sure they’ll be trying to do that.”
United play their first pre-season friendly against Liverpool on July 12th.
