Celtic have won 51 league titles in their history but few stand out more than their 35th such triumph in 1987/88. That Centenary season would of course go on to be even better as the Bhoys would secure a historic double, at a time when the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee United, and Rangers were very strong.

Celtic clinched the title in front of a racous Celtic Park, which was bursting at the seams. The official attendance is recorded as 60,800 but Directors later admitted the figure was actually 72,000 – even then there are suggestions the real number should have been approaching 90,000. Fans were situated around the track at pitchside, such was the overcrowding.

It was a day to remember as Celtic took the lead through Chris Morris inside three minutes. Andy Walker’s quick fire double in the 75th and 76th minutes then secured the trophy with a 3-0 win. A pitch invasion followed as the crowd went wild.

Wonderful days!
