Wayne Rooney's younger brother John scored a stunning goal from the halfway line for Macclesfield Town on Tuesday.

It was similar to a famous goal scored by Wayne for Everton against West Ham in the Premier League in 2017.

But midfielder John Rooney's superb strike came six leagues lower in the English football pyramid, in the NPL Premier Division.

His ambitious lob helped Macclesfield hold Basford United to a 1-1 draw at Moss Rose.

John Rooney, 32, began his youth career with Everton at the age of six before first joining Macclesfield in 2002 following his release by the Goodison Park club.

After stints with the New York Red Bulls, Orlando City, Barnsley, Bury, Chester, Wrexham, Guiseley, Barrow, Stockport County and Oldham Athletic, he returned to Macclesfield for a second spell in August.
