DC United fans love Wayne Rooney from his time at the MLS outfit as a player and they will be waiting impatiently for his debut as head coach.
Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played as Rooney’s team-mate at Old Trafford, has sent his best wishes to Rooney as he awaits a work visa approval.
The German sent some words of encouragement via Twitter before Bayern Munich took on DC United in a friendly match at Audi Field. And, to DC United’s credit, the Bundesliga champions score six most weeks.
Schweinsteiger enjoyed a spell in the MLS before retiring and played against Rooney. He recorded eight goals and 15 assists across 85 games for Chicago Fire.
I laughed to myself as I read a piece in The Washington Post asking whether Rooney can make DC United worth watching again. Not because of Rooney or his management because it is something I rate highly from his time at Derby County, but the sheer brutality in the article about how the club has not enjoyed any heights since Rooney left the club back in 2020.
It’s also evident that he will get a much easier ride with the Washington press, which I think he deserves. Barry Svrluga writes: “He didn’t come to the District for a vacation. He came here to change what United saw as possible. He committed to the club. He committed to the community. His time was fleeting because a young family pulled him back home to England. But he was a beacon while he was around, 23 goals and 15 assists in 48 matches, a 10-match unbeaten streak to close the 2018 regular season, real hope for a return to glory.”
Hopefully, it goes to plan for Rooney in the States and he can give the DC United fans something to celebrate.
