Wayne Rooney is the leading candidate to become manager at Birmingham City following the sacking of John Eustace.

The 37-year-old left MLS side DC United after his contract was terminated following a mutual agreement.

According to Aaron Paul of BBC 5 Live , Rooney will take Ashley Cole and John O’Shea with him to Birmingham City when the club decide to offer him the job.

The former United and England striker had an underwhelming spell in America as manager, missing out on the play-offs this season, but he is now set to return to the Championship.

There was always going to be a point in time when Rooney would return to England having spoken of his dream to manage Manchester United.

Rooney previously managed Derby County where he found himself in the midst of one of the darkest chapters in the club’s history. The club were in administration, they had no money to spend and transfer embargoes on top of points deductions.

United’s all-time record goalscorer demonstrated tremendous leadership at Derby County. At Birmingham, he will be given the task of promotion to the Premier League.
