Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign Mason Mount in the summer.
Lampard is not the first person to raise questions over the signing of Mount, but his comments carry weight since the England international performed well under him at not just Chelsea but Derby County too.
Now, after an injury-hit start to life at Old Trafford, Lampard is questioning where Mount fits into Erik ten Hag’s team. He told the Stick to Football podcast: “The only worry I had when he went to Man United was, where do Bruno Fernandes and him fit? You’ve also got Casemiro, and I know it’s starting to develop and change away from that already as an idea, but you kind of go: where do you fit?
“And I think when you are – and this is not to dig Mason or Man United out for bringing him in – but I think when you get a player of that level for that amount of money, you’ve got to go: this is the plan. That’s what I’d want to hear, and my question would be: where does he fit?”
United spent £55m to sign Mount from Chelsea in the summer but he has not made an impact at the club. Everyone at the club hopes he can return from his calf injury soon to reach the previous high standards he showed at Stamford Bridge.
Injuries have been a problem for Ten Hag and his plans to implement a new style of play this season, hence why players like Mount have been unable to have the impact we all hoped they would.
Ten Hag will expect better results and performances from his team when the likes of Mount are fully recovered from injury.
