Lionel Messi will become a free agent on June 30 when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires. As a result, there is plenty of speculation about where the Argentine will play for the 2023-24 season.

A possible option is a return to FC Barcelona, who will do everything to reunite with their former player. However, their financial problems remain a hurdle, so they’ll have to offload players to have Messi return to the squad.

Nonetheless, Javier Mascherano hopes that his former teammate will find his way to Camp Nou and close out his career, where his first team club career began.

“Everything that has happened from the World Cup to here, because I imagine it must have something to do; it’s a pity because instead of being able to enjoy a player like Leo, disowning and insulting him is not taking advantage of the time he’s at your club,” Mascherano told TyC Sports (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

“I would like Messi to come back and finish there [at Barcelona]. I don’t know if the conditions are right either, but, personally, I would really like him to be able to close his chapter in Barcelona by returning next season.”

If Messi and Barcelona cannot reunite, the Argentine must evaluate his other options as a move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and MLS side Inter Miami are keen on the player.

As for PSG, it does seem that the two parties are heading toward an exit and the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will need to continue elsewhere.
