Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes joined Manchester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers on transfer deadline day.

Nunes signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after City agreed to pay Wolves £53 million for the 25-year-old.

Wolves will also be entitled to 10% of any profit City make if they eventually sell Nunes for more than £53m.

Nunes joined Wolves for a £38m transfer fee in August 2022 when he arrived from Sporting Lisbon.

He made 36 Premier League appearances for the Molineux club - scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Nunes had refused to train with Wolves in recent days in an attempt to force through his dream move to City.

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs criticized Nunes in a club statement on Friday.

"I was disappointed with how it ended," said Hobbs. "It wasn't necessary the stance Matheus took, but we ended with a good resolution for everyone.

"Matheus is a hugely talented player who would admit that last season he didn't hit the heights he expected, but it was a tough season for the team, so maybe he wasn't allowed to do that."

Wolves finished 13th in the Premier League last season - 48 points behind champions City, who also won the FA Cup and Champions League.

"I'm so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I've admired for a long time," Nunes told ManCity.com.

"The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I couldn't turn down.

"I've learned so much during my season at Wolves and I'm excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me.

"I'm really excited to get going, meet the fans and hopefully be a part of plenty more success at City."

Nunes will wear the no.27 jersey in his first season as a City player.
