Cristiano Ronaldo’s side must go the long route if they are to qualify for the World Cup which takes place next year in Qatar as only three teams will make it through from the 12 European countries remaining.

Portugal will face Turkey in the semi-finals of the play-offs, before potentially facing Euro 2020 champions Italy in the final, with only one of the two nations able to squeeze through this qualification process.

We’ve currently got three United players representing Portugal – Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo – and they would’ve all been disappointed after a shocking loss to Serbia a few week ago.

That really ruined their chances of automatically qualifying for the World Cup.

Portugal will now have to graft their way through crucial play-off games in March to ensure that Ronaldo plays in at least one more World Cup.

It’s what we all want!

A special note goes to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will be hoping to edge a step closer to gracing another major international tournament when Sweden take on Czech Republic.

FIFA World Cup 2020 play-off draw:

Path A

Semi-finals: Scotland vs Ukraine, Wales vs Austria

Final: The winners of Wales vs Austria will host the final.

Path B

Semi-finals: Russia vs Poland, Sweden vs Czech Republic

Final: The winners of Russia vs Sweden will host the final.

Path C

Semi-finals: Italy vs North Macedonia, Portugal vs Turkey

Final: The winners of Portugal vs Turkey will host the final.
