Manchester United chiefs had reportedly placed Xavi on their managerial shortlist before he U-turned on his Barcelona future, as per Relevo.

Yesterday, the Catalan legend announced that he will remain head coach of his former club long-term despite announcing in January that he would be stepping down at the end of the current season.

Xavi claims that positive conversations with president Joan Laporta gave him the assurances he needs to continue leading the Blaugrana, whom he initially took over in 2021 after succeeding Ronald Koeman.

As such, the report from Spain states that United were following Wednesday’s developments intensely due to their interest in the ex-midfielder. Since taking the reins, he has won the La Liga title and Supercopa de Espana.

Erik ten Hag faces an uncertain future

It’s been widely speculated that Erik ten Hag is on borrowed time since the minority investment of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, which came amidst a turbulent season for the Red Devils.

The worst-case scenario could see the 20-time champions end the campaign trophyless and without Champions League football, the latter of which is the expectation at this stage, given that they sit 13 points away from fourth.
