Zlatan Ibrahimovic fined for financial interest in betting company

Reports surfaced last month that AC Milan superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was under UEFA investigation due to an "alleged financial interest in a betting company."

Per a Sky Sports story, Ibrahimovic has been fined 50,000 euros (roughly $61,000) and given a directive "aimed at ceasing the player's association with the relevant betting company." The 39-year-old is a part-owner of Bethard, a wagering company based in Malta, and it was reported in late April he was facing a potential fine of over $109,000 and also a ban from football-related activities for up to three years.

He was found guilty of violating a UEFA rule that pertains to an individual who "participates directly or indirectly in betting or similar activities relating to competition matches or who has a direct or indirect financial interest in such activities."

Additionally, AC Milan were also fined 25,000 euros (approximately $30,500).

Don't feel too bad for the outspoken and polarizing forward. Before news of the UEFA investigation went public, Ibrahimovic put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension said to be worth around $7 million.
