FC Barcelona moved swiftly to secure the signing of Joan Garcia from RCDE Espanyol early on in the summer. One of the most wanted shot-stoppers after his brilliant La Liga season, it was a huge coup for the Catalan club to snatch him from their local rivals.
On the surface level, it looked like an almost impossible deal to pull off until it eventually happened and it must be said that Joan Garcia made a great effort to be courageous enough and cross the Catalan divide to sign for Barcelona.
Deco & Co. also went ahead of tied down veteran Wojciech Szczesny to a new deal to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future. However, this left club captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the limbo with his future at Barcelona all but over.

Ter Stegen has since been training in the gym since the first team began training, due to a back issue. It has been mentioned that the club captain could undergo surgery to fix his back, which would keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.
Now, as per Mundo Deportivo, should Ter Stegen go under the knife, Barcelona could use the opportunity to de-register him and use 80% of his wage space to register new signing Joan Garcia but Szczesny will have to wait.
This is a clear indication that Hansi Flick has made the decision to go into the new season with Joan Garcia as his number one choice inbetween the posts. Meanwhile, the club would be looking to pull off other financial moves to register Szczesny and any other potential new signings.
However, one major concern with this plan is that it is pretty much a short-term measure. Barcelona are likely to find themselves in a pickle about Ter Stegen’s future once he returns after surgery, with a sale effectively ruled out until he can prove his recovery.
Barcelona find themselves in a very tricky situation this summer and how they handle the situation with their club captain would go a long way in defining their season. An unhappy dressing room is very difficult to deal with and the onus will be on Hansi Flick to keep the group united, irrespective of what happens this summer.
