Manchester United have been navigating a somewhat mixed season, with Ruben Amorim tasked with keeping the Red Devils competitive across the Premier League.
The club’s midfield has been a key talking point, with performances under scrutiny after inconsistent results in recent matches.
Amid this, United supporters have closely followed Casemiro’s form, recognising the Brazilian’s influence in controlling games and shielding the defence.
As international breaks arrive, the spotlight often shifts to players’ futures, especially those whose contracts are nearing their end.
Midfield stability remains a priority for Amorim, who has emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong core while planning for next season.
One of the central figures in these discussions is Casemiro himself.
The 33-year-old Brazilian has recently spoken about his plans for the future in an interview with O Globo, following his call-up to the national team.
Casemiro, whose United contract expires in June with a 12-month extension option, said: “Football is my life, right? So it’s inevitable [to continue].
“But I think my wife and family will want some time for themselves, yes.
“I’m one of those who think that in life you have to have a plan.
“But I’m into short-term goals.
“Of course, it’s inevitable to think about being in good shape for a World Cup, but you can’t expect to be in good shape for the World Cup if you’re not doing well at Manchester United.”
He continued on his day-to-day approach: “For the next call-up, I have to be in good shape.
“I think day by day: tomorrow I have a good training session, at the weekend I have to play a great game, and so on.”
Amorim was asked about Casemiro’s contract ahead of the upcoming Tottenham clash, responding: “Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen.
“My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem.
“I don’t know what is going to happen. Let’s focus on this season.
“I’m really happy with Casemiro, he is really important.
“I’m really happy with Harry, but I know what you guys are asking, let’s focus on this season and then we’ll see the next season.”
Casemiro’s role this season has been crucial, starting nine Premier League games and regaining a spot in Brazil’s starting XI under Carlo Ancelotti.
Despite being the highest earner in the United squad, his performances continue to spark debate among fans over whether a contract extension is justified. As the season progresses, both player and club appear focused on short-term goals, leaving the long-term picture open to careful consideration.
