Retired German midfielder Toni Kroos tried to offer Inter Milan some words of encouragement following their horrific defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. However, he also argued that Simone Inzaghi’s men had luck on their side.

The Serie A giants started the 2024/25 campaign on a promising note, but it all collapsed in the final stretch. Not only did they miss out on the Serie A title after falling short in their battle with Napoli, but they also suffered a traumatic experience in the Champions League.

In the lead-up to the big finale in Munich, the odds were relatively close. Some of the most prevalent sportsbooks identified PSG as the favourites to prevail, however, no one had envisioned such a one-sided affair. In the end, sadly for Inter and their shell-shocked supporters, all of their players failed to deliver, while their French opponents ran riot at the Allianz Arena.

The Ligue 1 champions took an early lead through Achraf Hakimi, and they never looked back. The Moroccan apologised to the Inter fans after scoring against them, having been a former Nerazzurro himself, but he and his teammates never took their foot off the gas pedal.

Inter Milan Suffered Historic UCL Defeat

In the end, PSG registered an astonishing 5-0 victory. This went down in history as the largest result in a Champions League final.

For his part, Kroos admitted he never saw this coming, even though he had expected the French team to win.

“I was at the stadium. On the eve, I thought PSG could win, but not like that,” said the legendary player in his interview with Sport Week via FcInterNews.

“The superiority was so obvious that it took me by surprise. We seldom witness such a gap in the final.

“Usually, tension and pressure prevail, with the teams focusing on defending first. But PSG played very well.”

Toni Kroos Explains Why He Thinks Inter Milan Were Lucky To Reach The Final

Kroos then admitted that Inter deserved to reach the final twice in three years. However, he argues they were slightly lucky in their journey to Munich.

“I would see the bright side; the two finals were deserved, even if Inter had a bit of luck. After all, Bayern were the better side in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, they had suffered a lot against Barça.

“But if you get to the end, it’s because you deserve it. The final was difficult and sad, but you have to consider the whole journey; it’s not easy to get there.”
