Joshua Zirkzee is in Atalanta’s sights, and Manchester United value him at €35m

Joshua Zirkzee has struggled to make an impact at Manchester United. Signed for £36.5 million from Bologna, the Dutch striker has found life in the Premier League challenging, managing just seven goals in 49 appearances. Since Rúben Amorim’s arrival, his position in the squad has become even more uncertain, with the new manager favouring more dynamic forwards such as recent signing Matheus Cunha.

Given the club’s need to raise funds to strengthen other areas of the squad, selling Zirkzee ahead of the 2025/26 season appears to be a sensible decision. United are open to offers, and Atalanta have already expressed interest.

Atalanta insist on Zirkzee: permanent sale or loan?

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, via Sport Witness, Atalanta are dreaming of bringing Joshua Zirkzee to Bergamo. The Serie A club had previously tracked the Dutch striker during his stint at Bayern Munich between 2020 and 2021. Now, TuttoAtalanta, also relayed by Sport Witness, reports that there is growing belief within Serie A circles that a deal could be possible—though the financials remain a major obstacle.

Manchester United are reportedly demanding €35 million, while Zirkzee is asking for a salary exceeding €5 million per year. These figures are currently holding La Dea back, as they remain cautious about committing heavily despite their admiration for the player. However, if Ademola Lookman departs this summer, the urgency to secure a new striker will increase.

One advantage lies in the strong relationship between the two clubs, who have previously negotiated deals for Amad Diallo and Rasmus Højlund. Additionally, the presence of John Murtough, now part of Atalanta’s leadership after previously serving as a senior figure at Manchester United, could play a crucial role in facilitating talks.

Manchester United’s decision to move on from Joshua Zirkzee comes as no surprise. His performances have been underwhelming, the transfer fee significant, and his compatibility with Rúben Amorim’s system virtually nonexistent. With just seven goals since his arrival, Zirkzee has offered little to justify the club’s £36.5 million investment. Amorim has made it clear that the team needs a reliable goalscorer, and Zirkzee simply doesn’t fit that profile. United are now focused on freeing up the wage bill and generating funds for reinforcements.

Atalanta remain interested, but are reportedly unable to meet the striker’s salary demands. A loan deal with an option to buy, where United cover part of his wages could be a practical solution. Another viable route would be to include Zirkzee in a swap deal involving midfielder Ederson. This approach would allow United to recoup some value, secure a key target, and offer Atalanta a forward who remains well-regarded in Bergamo.
