Manchester United are ready to cut their losses on Jadon Sancho

When Jadon Sancho left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United, he seemed to have it all, youth, speed, skill, and a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest talents. English football welcomed him with open arms, but the reality has been far from the expectations. Now, the winger’s name is once again making headlines, but for all the wrong reasons.

According to the Mirror, Manchester United are prepared to offload Sancho for a fee well below the £73 million they initially invested. Reports suggest the club would now settle for less than £20 million, a staggering drop that underscores how far the relationship between player and club has deteriorated.

Chelsea, who had initially agreed to a £25 million deal for the winger, are now reconsidering. The London club is exploring the possibility of paying a £5 million penalty to cancel the agreement, a decision that has reignited interest in Germany.

Bayer Leverkusen, in particular, may have the financial leverage to facilitate a move. The club is poised to receive a substantial windfall if, as expected, Xabi Alonso departs for Real Madrid. Those funds could be redirected towards securing Sancho, whose creativity and flair could offset the potential exit of Florian Wirtz.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are banking on their shared history with Sancho to tempt him back to Signal Iduna Park. The winger was a sensation during his time in Germany, and Dortmund’s approach could offer him the chance to revive his career in a system he knows well.

However, the biggest obstacle remains Sancho’s hefty £250,000-a-week salary. Neither Leverkusen nor Dortmund are likely to match that figure, but Manchester United’s willingness to accept a significantly reduced fee , reportedly under £20 million, could facilitate a compromise. With just one year left on his contract and no place in Ruben Amorim’s plans, United may be more inclined to negotiate favourable terms to expedite Sancho’s exit.

When Jadon Sancho is in form, he has qualities that few wingers can match. He can break lines effortlessly, create numerical superiority on his own, and link up seamlessly with the inside players. His first touch is sublime, his vision sharp, attributes that once made him one of the most exciting attacking prospects in Europe.

During his peak at Borussia Dortmund, Sancho was a game-changer. He could drift inside or stay wide, break defensive structures with his dribbling and deliver incisive final passes. Technically, he is a level above most wingers, possessing the ability to read the game rather than just run it. In his best moments, he was unpredictable, confident, and decisive.

But that version of Sancho never fully materialised at Old Trafford. The £73 million signing quickly went from a marquee arrival to a fringe player, repeatedly failing to cement his place in the starting XI. Injuries interrupted his rhythm, and his attitude raised questions among the coaching staff. Differences with managers and a perceived lack of work rate further complicated his position.

The pressure to justify his price tag compounded matters. Sancho arrived as the offensive saviour, but instead of thriving, he became burdened by expectations. The loan move to Chelsea, which was meant to be a reset, did little to reignite his spark. Instead, it only underscored how far he had fallen from his Dortmund days.

Now, with Ruben Amorim at the helm, the writing is on the wall. Amorim wants a leaner, more committed squad — a group of players who align with his tactical philosophy and work ethic. Sancho, despite his undeniable talent, does not fit that profile. His time at United feels like a broken narrative that neither party can afford to prolong.
