Manchester United might have stitched together a few consistent wins after a disastrous start to the season, but they still continue to face some internal conflicts regarding the situation of some players. Kobbie Mainoo is one such player who has found himself in such a situation at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old Englishman had a bright start to his first-team career after evolving through the academy. However, he continues to suffer from a lack of gametime under Portuguese manager, Ruben Amorim, which has forced him to reconsider his future at Old Trafford. Now, we have a new report coming up about his future.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli plan a fresh move in January to bring the midfielder to Italy. The Serie A champions want midfield reinforcements before Frank Anguissa joins Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations. So, they view Mainoo as an ideal option who offers both energy and control in midfield.
Napoli also tried to sign him on loan in the summer, and their renewed interest comes from the same reason. They need a player who manages both the creative and defensive sides of the game. Amorim, though, stopped the move to keep the squad compact.
That decision now raises questions because United still insist they will not sell him in January at least, but his limited playing time makes fans doubt his long-term happiness. Amorim’s strict 3-4-2-1 setup rarely allows freedom, and Mainoo’s slower adjustment pushes him behind Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. Interestingly, a report also claimed that Barcelona want to sign Mainoo from United, showing that clubs across Europe admire his talent.
Amorim’s caution makes sense, but still feels short-sighted. United’s system under him relies too much on structure, and that approach stifles creativity, especially for players like Mainoo who excel in quick transitions.
Amorim continues to play Fernandes in a deeper midfield role this season, which limits Mainoo’s minutes and sends a mixed signal about youth development. For a club known for trusting young players, that approach feels off-brand.
Statistically, Mainoo shows excellent ball control and strong resistance to pressure. He ranks among the best midfielders under 21 in the Premier League as of October 2025. Those numbers prove he deserves more responsibility.
However, Amorim continues to depend on experienced players, which may push the youngster to reject a new contract. If Mainoo feels ignored, he might look for an exit, and Napoli or Barcelona’s reported interest could tempt him to leave.
In our view, Amorim risks losing a special talent through stubborn choices. He should give Mainoo gradual chances in important games to blend his philosophy with the club’s future plan.
If United keep benching him, frustration might turn into a wish to leave. Amorim’s rigid approach may secure short-term results, but it will cost Manchester United a player who represents the calm and intelligence their next generation needs.
