Tottenham Hotspur have been looking at a possible move to bring in a new central defender for a while now.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been the undisputed first-choice centre-back pairing for Spurs since 2023. However, the duo are injury prone and the club bosses cannot ignore that fact. Romero has missed the last few games with an adductor strain, and Kevin Danso has deputised for the Spurs skipper at the back.
Danso has performed well, showing that he can be relied upon when required. However, with the Lilywhites battling for a top-four spot and competing in the Champions League, Thomas Frank has to beef up his squad. The injury list has been growing lately, which should concern the Danish tactician. He cannot risk heading into the second half of the campaign with limited resources and hurt the team’s chances of achieving its objectives.
Thus, it is logical why Tottenham have been eyeing a new central defender. And Spurs have been looking to sign Barcelona defender Eric Garcia, alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Eric Garcia has been Barcelona’s best defender this season, which should have surprised plenty of fans. The 24-year-old is looking at home and shining for the first time in Barcelona colours since he re-joined his boyhood club from Manchester City in 2021. The Spaniard is the Catalan club’s second-most used player this season, behind compatriot Pedri.
Hansi Flick has placed a lot of faith in Garcia, and he has blossomed into one of Barcelona’s standout performers. His performances have caught the attention of Tottenham and Chelsea, who want to tempt him back to the Premier League. However, the versatile defender is not interested in it.
This is because, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Garcia has agreed terms on a new deal with Barcelona. Both Tottenham and Chelsea had enquired about him in recent weeks, given his current deal is due to expire at the end of the season. Having become a key player under Hansi Flick, the Spanish international will now pen fresh terms with the defending La Liga champions.
“At one point in the summer with Garcia’s contract expiring, there was real interest with Chelsea and Spurs both keen,” TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed.
“He is a class act and has Premier League experience; he ticks a lot of boxes. However, Garcia has since become a big player under Hansi Flick, and he is not going anywhere. I am told in recent weeks, his people have confirmed that a new deal is imminent.”
Tottenham’s pursuit of Garcia has now suffered a setback following recent developments regarding a new contract. The Barca star was one of the players the North London club had been evaluating, but they must now look elsewhere.
Lazio’s Mario Gila has been on the Lilywhites’ radar. Gila has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A in the last couple of years, and with his contract at Lazio expiring in 2027, interest seems to be growing in him. The Serie A side are bracing for offers in January and would consider selling their star defender at €45-50 million.
A modern-day defender with fantastic passing range, aerial ability and tackling skills, the Spaniard would be an excellent addition to the Premier League side’s defensive ranks.
