The relegation battle goes down to the final day as Tottenham are beaten 2-1 by Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Chelsea on Tuesday evening, thus taking their nervous wait to secure safety in the Premier League on the final day of the season.

A fantastic long-range strike from Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez broke the deadlock in the first half. Andrey Santos doubled the hosts’ lead after the break, before Richarlison pulled a goal back. Eventually, Richarlison’s goal only turned out to be a consolation, and Tottenham’s four-game unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of their rivals from across London.

The result leaves Spurs two points ahead of West Ham, just above the relegation zone, after they failed to pull away. A point at Stamford Bridge would have essentially sealed survival given Tottenham’s superior goal difference, but now the relegation battle will go down to the wire this weekend.

Paul Robinson gives verdict on Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea

Ex-goalkeeper Paul Robinson has given his verdict on Tottenham’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea. The English pundit feels his former club didn’t do enough to beat the Blues, making “many bad choices” with and without the ball.

“They didn’t deserve anything tonight, Tottenham. The way that they played in the first half, they huffed and puffed in the second half,” Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra (h/t BBC Sport).

“The last passage of play there sums it up. Mathys Tel was so poor. He had two opportunities at the far post in stoppage time. That was a wonderful opportunity to play the ball into a box full of yellow jerseys – and it ended up in the goalkeeper’s arms.

“Too many bad choices, too many wrong decisions. The recent performances under Roberto de Zerbi were not emulated tonight. Chelsea didn’t have to do too much. They were in control for most of it.

“Spurs showed attacking intent in fits and starts, but they didn’t do enough tonight.”

Tottenham lacked quality vs. Chelsea

Following recent performances, Tottenham fans were hopeful of getting a result and ending their Stamford Bridge curse. However, their expectations came crashing down as Spurs perhaps produced their worst performance in De Zerbi’s short tenure in N17.

Spurs started the game well, though, with Mathys Tel hitting the post with a diving header. As the game progressed, they started losing control, and the Chelsea players gained confidence. The Enzo Fernandez goal sucked a lot of energy from the Spurs players. Santos doubling the home side’s advantage put De Zerbi’s side further in the backseat.

Richarlison pulled one back to give the Lilywhites hope, galvanising the away section of Stamford Bridge. But it wasn’t enough as Chelsea held onto the win. Overall, Tottenham were poor with and without the ball. Robinson perfectly summed up Tottenham’s display vs. Chelsea, and indeed, we didn’t deserve anything out of this game.

Nonetheless, Spurs’ fate remains in their own hands as we face a crucial home clash with Everton on the final day.
