Timo Werner has had a pretty tough couple of years as a Chelsea player. Despite some great flashes, he’s mainly struggled, and had some long periods out of the team.

But his recent form has been much better, and he played well enough against Southampton last weekend to earn a start against Real Madrid in midweek, and he then kept that place for the game against Crystal Palace yesterday.

In fact, his form has been good enough that his teammates are happy to have a cheeky laugh at his expense rather than just pitying him – as some quotes from Mason Mount in The Mirror reveal.

Mount revealed that he and Jorginho had a chuckle on the bench when their teammate missed a chance against Palace:

“He could have had probably a couple of goals as well. He’s brilliant, he’s done so well over the last couple of games,” the midfielder said.

“You can see in the second half, he had a chance I think and he missed, me and Jorgi [Jorginho] were laughing on the bench, and he ran all the way back to the halfway line to win the ball back! That shows what kind of player he is and what he brings to the team.”

It’s a good sign that they’re able to laugh at his misses rather than cry, as they might have done not long ago. It’s still been a disappointing season overall, but once again we’ve seen a flash of the quality that made Chelsea sign him in the first place.
