A house divided cannot stand. Mohamed Salah has created a serious fissure at Liverpool and has thrown the club into chaos.
Some supporters will understand his frustration after he was left out of Liverpool’s starting XI for three consecutive Premier League matches. Particularly, as Arne Slot’s staggering side has struggled to ninth place in the league table.
Salah is fuming because he knows that he can make a difference, and he can’t do anything about it if he’s been cast out of the starting XI. He must be thinking that it’s absolutely insane that he’s sitting on the bench after winning last season’s Premier League Golden Boot and helping the Reds lift the Premier League title.
It feels like Salah kept a lid on his boiling frustration for weeks and finally let it all spill out following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw against Leeds United on Saturday. Following the match, he launched into an aggrieved rant.
"I don't think I am the problem"

“I can’t believe it, I’m very, very disappointed,” Salah told reporters. “I have done so much for this club down the years, and especially last season.
“Now I’m sitting on the bench, and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.
“I got a lot of promises in the summer, and so far I am on the bench for three games, so I can’t say they keep the promise. I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.
“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much.”
Salah has essentially split Liverpool’s fan base into two camps. Some supporters who have already grown frustrated with Slot’s unconvincing second season at Anfield will shout even louder for his sacking. Others will view Salah’s comments as player power gone mad and his explosive post-match comments as evidence of the Egyptian star attempting to challenge his manager’s authority.
Even if Salah feels like he is 100 percent justified to feel let down by Slot and others at the club, he chose to air out the dirty laundry in public. That’s not the Liverpool way.
He might be right in that Slot is a man who is running out of time in the Anfield hot seat. Slot’s tactics and selections have been head-scratching at times. Slot may have won last season’s Premier League title on a foundation that was largely built by his managerial predecessor Jurgen Klopp.
It’s possible that the months ahead will prove that the job is too big for Slot and reveal that his magical first season in charge was a fluke, but Salah made a misstep by making comments that won’t help anyone’s situation inside the famed Merseyside club.
The question now is how much of a misstep did Salah make, and can the frosty situation be repaired? Did Salah plunge himself to the point of no return like Cristiano Ronaldo did in November 2022 when he expressed to Piers Morgan that he had "no respect" for then-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag?
United responded by terminating Ronaldo’s contract. Even though ten Hag was under pressure, he outlasted Ronaldo at Old Trafford by nearly two years. Even the biggest players on the planet rarely succeed in winning a battle against their manager.
Can cooler heads prevail? If Salah wishes to mend fences, he will need to apologize to his manager behind closed doors and show the public that he’s on board with Slot, whether or not he agrees with his tactics and selections.
Salah will need to show Slot, the supporters and Liverpool’s hierarchy that he’s ready to do whatever is best for the club, that he will redouble his efforts in training and that he’ll be a happy camper even when he’s left out of the starting XI.
It was Salah’s mistake. He made this mess. If he wants to save his Liverpool career, it’s up to him to act like a professional and set things right.
