Simply put, Pipeline is gnarly. As one of the most dangerous surf spots on the planet, a perfect day at Pipe isn't all fun and games.

So far this winter, Pipeline's hospitalized, concussed, and knocked out and handful of surfers who endured brutal wipeouts.

Revered as surfing's "proving grounds," even pros who have proved themselves out there for decades still pay their dues every once in a while. Take for instance, legendary surfer Shane Dorian in the clip below.

The footage above comes from Off Da Lip who captioned it:

"Gnarly Wipeout at Backdoor"

The video above shows Dorian fully committed, taking off on a Backdoor bomb.

He stands up looking like he has it, but then air drops head-first into the water.

The next clip shows him walking up the beach, appearing unscathed.

Dorian's been scoring at Pipeline this winter after getting stem cell treatment in Mexico last October and has been sharing updates on his progress ever since.

His wipeout comes amid a series of other brutal wipeouts that sent surfers to the hospital.

Most recently, 25-year-old Austin Gibbons was revived on the beach after a brutal wipeout at Pipe, that hospitalized him in critical condition.

Brazil's Joao Chianca was the first in early December, who was hospitalized following a wipeout at Backdoor—the righthander at Pipeline—that knocked him unconscious.

Maui big wave surfer Kai Lenny cracked his helmet and ended up hospitalized and concussed during his SUP heat at Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.

Tahiti's Eimeo Czermak was slapped with a huge bill after a Pipe wipeout in December sent him to the hospital during the 2023 Vans Pipe Masters.
