A few weeks back, videos began circulating on social media, showing a mysterious and alluring island, which had formed off the Gold Coast of Australia. Soon, it went viral.
To a surfer’s eye, it appeared that the mysto spot had potential for a peeling A-Frame peak off the tip of the sandbank – however, no novelty sessions have been revealed from enigmatic atoll. Perhaps a move by locals, keeping the new spot a secret. Valid.
However, it appears that the island – which was created from a massive $35 million sand dredging project – isn’t long for this world. Officials are projecting that the Surfers Paradise sandbank will vanish by Christmas. Last chance to score a rare novelty wave?
The island, as it’s being dubbed, despite being more of an accumulation of sand, only accessible by low tide, was created by an offshore barge, which has been pumping one million cubic meters of sand to replenish the coastline following Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year.
"It's pretty awesome … who wouldn't want an island out the front of their beach?" International Coastal Management engineer Aaron Salyer told ABC.
Alas, though, the island may be gone soon. Salyer added: "It'll start to dissipate over the Christmas season and eventually wash its way in."
Since videos of the island began gaining steam on social media, folks have been flocking to the new sliver of sand amidst a surrounding sea. But officials warn about dangers.
Per Gold Coast chief lifeguard Will Ashley: "There's a lot of water that moves around that island that's been created there so we are asking people to stay away. If you're going to swim at the beach, we recommend coming to the flags, having a safe swim with the lifeguards or lifesavers. We don't encourage anyone to enter the water at night, or in that area at all, to try and get out to the sandbank.”
So, if you’re looking to check out a fleeting feat of manmade influence upon mother nature – and perhaps score one of those A-Frame peaks – time is running out.
But as the lifeguards said, heed caution in doing so.
