Alexander Zverev will go to trial in May, following the accusations that he 'physically abused' ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea.

Zverev is currently in Melbourne for the Australian Open, gearing up to play his first round match against compatriot Dominik Koepfer tomorrow.

However, most of the conversation is not about his antics on the court and rather those off it.

The Berlin criminal court confirmed that the 26-year-old would have a hearing in May for 'physically abusing a woman and damaging her health during an argument'.

Patea, who is the mother of Zverev's child, is that woman in question and made the allegations in July of last year.

Zverev has consistently rejected these allegations, but was given a penalty order of €450,000 ($492,700) in October, which he objected and is hence why the case is now going to trial.

Upon announcement of the hearing, court spokesperson Lisa Jani said, "The main hearing in the case will begin in May 2024. We will announce the details in due course."

This is not the first time that Zverev has been accused of physical and emotional violence towards a partner, with Olya Sharypova previously raising accusations in October 2020.

An investigation that lasted 15 months was taken out by the ATP, however it was closed without Zverev receiving punishment due to 'insufficient evidence'.

Zverev's hearing will begin on Friday May 31 and is set to last a total of eight days, which will be at the same time as Roland Garros, however the German can be represented by a lawyer so will not need to be present.
