Alexander Zverev's epic Wimbledon collapse continues rough season

Taylor Fritz upset fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev in fourth-round Wimbledon action on Monday, giving the American a historic victory.

As monumental of a victory as it was for Fritz, the collapse was just as shocking for Zverev. The German had won 12 straight sets leading into the third one against Fritz, before seeing his opponent advance to the quarterfinals.

Zverev has never won a Grand Slam event but has made it to two finals.

He fell to Dominic Thiem in the 2020 U.S. Open finals and made it to three straight French Open semifinals, before breaking through to advance in 2024. Zverev lost to Carlos Alcaraz in excruciating fashion, losing in five sets after holding a 2-1 lead.

During the season's first major at the Australian Open, the 27-year-old made his first semifinal "down under" since 2020. After beating Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and going up 2-0 against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, he fell in a five-set thriller.

In non-major 2024 action, he entered April's BMW Open as the top seed but was stunned by 106th-ranked Cristian Garin in the quarterfinals. Zverev was seeded fourth in the Madrid Open but lost to 21st-seeded Francisco Cerundolo.

Zverev's lone notable championship in 2024 came in May's Italian Open, when he defeated Nicolas Jarry in the title match.

He's also made headlines off the court for the wrong reasons this year.

Zverev faced domestic abuse allegations over the spring, and while a trial in Germany related to the allegations took place during the French Open, he wasn't required to be in attendance. The trial ended on June 7 after a settlement was reached out of court and Zverev agreed to pay €200,000.

His defeat at the All-England Club on Monday was the third time he's advanced to the fourth round at the tournament. Zverev has yet to make it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
