Andy Murray donating rest of season's prize money to help children in Ukraine
Former world No. 1 Andy Murray serves as an ambassador for the United Kingdom Committee for the United Nations Children's Fund and, like many in the sports world, has been left wanting to offer some assistance to those impacted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
As noted by Sky Sports, the three-time Grand Slam winner took to Twitter Tuesday to announce he's donating his prize money for the rest of the tennis season to support children directly affected by the Russian aggression.
In a press release shared by the Women's Tennis Association on Monday, that governing body, the ATP Tour, the International Tennis Federation and the four Grand Slams announced they had jointly made a donation of $700,000 to support Global Giving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund and the Ukraine Tennis Federation. They also created a "Tennis Plays for Peace" campaign that includes players wearing ribbons at the upcoming tournament in Indian Wells to show their support for the people of Ukraine.
"All seven organizations thank players, tournaments, staff and fans for their incredible efforts already, and further plans for 'Tennis Plays for Peace' will be communicated in the coming weeks," the statement concluded.
The English Premier League and English Football League announced on Tuesday they have suspended their broadcast contracts in Russia.
