Nuno Borges vs Francesco Passaro
Head-to-head: first meeting
Francesco Passaro’s run has been memorable regardless of how this match ends. The Italian’s last three wins at his home event have been in a final set tiebreak, including his final match in qualifying. Can the world #240 find another victory? It is a tough ask. The emotional and physical toll of those previous matches is likely to have taken a lot out of Passaro. Nuno Borges is adept at extending rallies and that ability should take him to victory in Rome.
Thiago Monteiro vs Miomir Kecmanovic
Head-to-head: Kecmanovic 1-0 Monteiro
Miomir Kecmanovic’s comeback against Casper Ruud in the previous round was quite extraordinary after losing the opening set 6-0. The Serbian faces another very tough battle against clay-court specialist Thiago Monteiro, who has won all his matches in Rome very comfortably so far. Although Kecmanovic will be full of confidence after beating Ruud, Monteiro gets a slight edge here. The Brazilian’s formidable forehand is capable of taking time away from Kecmanovic, which is the best way of unsettling him.

Alexander Zverev vs Luciano Darderi
Head-to-head: first meeting
Luciano Darderi was outstanding in front of his fans during a demolition of Mariano Navone in the previous round. The Italian is clearly inspired by the local support and this will not be an easy match for Alexander Zverev. Darderi needs to dictate as often as possible with his forehand to have a realistic chance of prevailing against the German. An upset is not impossible, but Zverev’s ability to get quick points with his powerful serve and excellent backhand makes him a narrow favourite in Rome.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Terence Atmane

Terence Atmane, ranked 137th, is another player to make an unexpected run in Rome. This is the Frenchman’s toughest task yet. Atmane will hope to get some joy with his left-handed topspin forehand into Grigor Dimitrov’s one-handed backhand. However, the overall class of the Bulgarian should still have enough to overcome Atmane. Expect it to be a competitive match though, with Atmane having a good chance of claiming a set.
