Dominic Thiem withdraws from Wimbledon due to wrist injury
The wrist injury that world No. 5 Dominic Thiem suffered earlier this week at the Mallorca Championships is unfortunately as bad as feared.
According to BBC Sport and the ATP Tour website, Thiem confirmed Thursday that he's dealing with a "detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist" and will not compete in the upcoming Wimbledon Championships that open Monday. Instead, the 27-year-old who won the 2020 US Open will have to wear a wrist splint for five weeks.
"I’m going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible," he explained in posts shared on social media. "They’ve informed me that I might be out for several weeks, but I will do my best to be back on court soon."
Thiem would've been seeded fourth at Wimbledon. Instead, he will now focus on defending his US Open crown after suffering the setback that forced him to retire from his matchup versus Adrian Mannarino in Mallorca on Tuesday.
