Andy Murray will make a Laver Cup debut this year after he was added to the European team for the exhibition event.

Murray is a former world number one, and it represents a big step for him as it suggests it is the first year he has felt strong enough and sufficiently pain free to take part.

He will join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in team Europe for the tournament, which takes place in London in late September.

“I’m looking forward to playing the Laver Cup in London,” Murray said. “I love playing as part of a team, and there is a great atmosphere and intensity to the event.

“I’ve heard lots of good things, and I’m excited to be teaming up with both Roger and Rafa for Team Europe.”

In response to the news, Roger Federer simply tweeted: “Europe Avengers assemble.”

The European team will once again be captained by Wimbledon and French Open legend Bjorn Borg, and he couldn’t wait to welcome Andy Murray into the fold.

“I am extremely excited to have Andy on our team,” Borg said” “He is a dedicated, ferocious, and inspirational competitor who has re-established himself at the top of the game.

“He will be an incredible asset for the home team in both singles and doubles.”

Andy Murray will have to be a captain’s pick at the Laver Cup, as Roger Federer will, as his ranking will not be high enough to be eligible for automatic invitation.

Meanwhile, Team World captain John McEnroe has already named his first three players, with Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Diego Schwartzman signing up.

All three players will join Team World based on their ATP ranking.
