Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has no shame in admitting that Jannik Sinner is the hottest commodity in men’s tennis at the moment. The 20-year-old has declared that Sinner is a title favorite in every tournament he plays. Alcaraz made these comments as he competes at the Madrid Open and hopes to defend his title for the second time in a row.
As the Spaniard was asked about Sinner being the favorite at the ATP Masters tournament, Alcaraz gave an affirmative answer and declared that he is a favorite in every tournament he plays. He also talked about trying not to let the Italian win any more titles.
Alcaraz said that he would try his best to stop Sinner if they faced each other in the tournament but he also highlighted the fact that it would be a tough job if the Italian played to his best level. Notably, both players have won their respective matches so far in the tournament.
Yeah, of course, I see him as a favorite player to win every tournament he goes. I'll try to play my best tennis. I'll try to not let him winning more titles (smiling), but it is difficult right now. But, you know, if Jannik plays at this level, as I said, he's the favorite in every tournament he goes. Carlos Alcaraz said.
Carlos Alcaraz talks about potential difficulties for Jannik Sinner
While Carlos Alcaraz hailed Jannik Sinner as the title favorite in Madrid, he also pointed out the potential difficulties the Italian might face in this tournament. Alcaraz highlighted that Sinner not playing a lot in Madrid might work against him.
The Spaniard also talked about the altitude difference in Madrid and claimed that it might trouble the Italian. However, Alcaraz seemed impressed with the way Sinner played in his first match.
Well, he's not used to playing here in Madrid. I think last year he missed it. I think he didn't play in this tournament since 2022, and he didn't play so much here in Madrid. So I don't know how it's gonna be, his game, with the altitude, but his first round was impressive. Carlos Alcaraz said.
Notably, Sinner had no trouble beating his second-round opponent as the 2024 Australian Open champion decimated compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets. In fact, Sinner served Sonego a bagel in the opening set and clinched the second set 6-3. He will be up against Pavel Kotov in the third round.
It is worth mentioning that Sinner has been in impeccable form this season. The Italian has won three titles including his maiden Grand Slam title. Also, he has reached at least the semifinal of every tournament played this season. Sinner’s current win-loss record stands at 25-2 with the latest defeat coming in Monte Carlo semifinal.
