Iga Swiatek admits bathroom break got her 'lighter,' helped her advance to U.S. Open final

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek dropped the first set of Thursday's U.S. Open women’s singles semifinal match against Aryna Sabalenka 3-6 and didn't look right on the court in Queens until she was able to step away for a minute.

Everyone now knows why.

As Jenna Lemoncelli noted for the New York Post, Swiatek rallied to close Sabalenka out 6-1, 6-4, and the 21-year-old admitted after the victory that a bathroom break after the first set helped her eliminate some excess... weight.

"It’s more what I did (in the bathroom)," Swiatek said in front of the New York City crowd. "I kind of needed to go. For sure I felt lighter. Sorry, that’s disgusting."

She also explained how the quick recess allowed her to emotionally regroup after the tough opening set.

"I tried to use that time to really try to think about what to change and do it in a good way," she said. "I remember earlier when I was younger, all I did in the bathroom between sets when I lost was cry. This time I can actually think about what to change and actually problem solve. I’m pretty glad I did that because I got a new idea for the second set."

The reigning French Open champion from Poland will take on the No. 5-ranked Ons Jabeur in the U.S. Open final on Saturday. Both Swiatek and Jabeur would do well to remember to utilize the facilities ahead of that battle if at all possible.
