Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to retire from competitive tennis after French Open

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will turn 37 years old later this month and has been slowed by multiple injury woes during the twilight of his long career.

Per Sky Sports and The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Tsonga announced in a video shared on social media that he's retiring after the upcoming French Open that is set to get underway on May 22.

"My head tells me, 'But you can play all your life,' and at the same time your body reminds you that your abilities to surpass yourself are no longer there," Tsonga explained.

He added: "This is the last thrill. This will be my 15th Roland. I hope that I will stay fit before and be able to be the one I have always been in that tournament."

Tsonga made semifinal appearances in the 2013 and 2015 French Open tournaments and reached a career-best ranking of world No. 5 back in 2012, the same year he won an Olympic silver medal in doubles play. He has 18 career ATP titles on his resume and lost to all-time great Novak Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open final.

He is currently No. 220 in the ATP rankings and, thus, must be granted a wild-card entry to compete in the French Open.
