Naomi Osaka to play in U.S. Open tune-up in Montreal

World No. 2 Naomi Osaka hasn't competed since she withdrew from the French Open after she was fined $15,000 for not participating in post-match press obligations due to what she referred to as mental-health concerns.

Osaka remains on track to play in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and event organizers for the National Bank Open held in Montreal from Aug. 9-15 confirmed Wednesday the 23-year-old will participate in that tournament.

Wimbledon champion and women's world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty is among other well-known players scheduled to compete in Montreal.

"We are delighted to welcome the likes of Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka, as well as Bianca Andreescu, who we know will get a reception for the ages from our passionate fans in Montreal," tournament director Eugene Lapierre explained in a statement shared by Reuters (h/t ESPN).

According to Sportsnet, the previously mentioned Andreescu, a Canadian, and men's living legend Rafael Nadal will look to defend their National Bank Open titles they won in 2019. Last year's events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nadal pulled out of Wimbledon and the Olympics last month for health reasons not related to the virus.
