Nick Kyrgios upsets No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in U.S. Open, despite 'bonehead' play

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is a unique character.

It's fair to say there's never a dull moment on the court when Kyrgios is involved. And Sunday's matchup against defending U.S. Open champion and No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev was no different.

Kyrgios knocked off Medvedev (7-6 (11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2), and he did so with the kind of flare only he could have.

During the third set of Sunday's matchup, Kyrgios made one of the oddest plays you'll ever see on a tennis court. A Medvedev return shot during a break-point wasn't going to make it over the net, but Kyrgios inexplicable ran to his opponents' side to knock it out of the air.

After the match, Kyrigios called it a "boneheaded play," adding he "thought that was legal."

Kyrgios now advances to the U.S. Open quarterfinals, where he'll face Russia's Karen Khachanov on Tuesday.
