Roger Federer withdraws from French Open after grueling third-round victory

Roger Federer's time at the French Open has come to an end.

The Swiss tennis star withdrew from the French Open on Sunday, citing concerns over his physical condition after a grueling third-round victory over Dominik Koepfer.

Federer was competing in his first major tournament since the 2020 Australian Open. After that event, he underwent a pair of operations on his right knee.

The 39-year-old said last month that he didn't see himself as ready to contend for the French Open title this spring and had his sights set on Wimbledon, which he has won a record eight times.

Federer took down Koepfer 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the third round and was supposed to play Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round on Monday.
