On 20th January, 2023, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik married TV actress Sana Javed. It came as a major surprise for the majority of fans as they believed he was still married to Indian Tennis star, Sania Mirza. Her father has now broken his silence regarding the wedding on X (formerly Twitter).

Imran Mirza, Sania’s father and coach, released a statement announcing that his daughter and Malik have been divorced for months. He said that Sania kept her private life away from the public eye and hence not many knew. But with fans across the world wondering if he married without divorcing the tennis star, Imran needed to inform fans.

Imran further added that Malik’s wedding had his daughter’s well wishes and further asked fans to give her privacy. A source from her family revealed that Sania had opted for divorce and had done a “Khula”.

What is Khula?

In Sharia law, there are two methods of divorce. It is “talaaq” and “khula”. Talaaq is done when the husband wants to end the marriage, while khula is done when the wife wants to do it. There is a waiting time in both to see if they can reconcile as well.

Pakistan media house, Geo News, reported that the divorce proceedings began in late-2022 due to Sania being unhappy with Malik meeting other women. The report also stated that the cricketer’s family was unhappy with the divorce, asking them to reconcile. His family has not attended the wedding as well, showing their unhappiness with his divorce.

Sania and Malik tied the knot on 12th April, 2010. The couple have one son together, Izhaan Malik Mirza, who was born on 23rd April, 2018.
