Serena Williams passes Chris Evert for most U.S. Open match wins
Tennis living legend Serena Williams makes history even when she doesn't produce a dominating victory.
The 38-year-old chasing a historic 24th Grand Slam title opened her 2020 U.S. Open on Tuesday with a two-set win over fellow American Kristie Ahn. That result gave Williams U.S. Open singles win No. 102, the most for any player in the Open Era. Williams began the day tied with Chris Evert on 101 victories.
Per the official U.S. Open website, Williams remains tied with Evert for the most U.S. Open titles with six. One more Grand Slam would tie Williams with Margaret Court for the most in history.
Ahn won early breaks in each of the first two sets but was unable to capitalize on those 2-0 advantages. While Williams rallied to win the opening set 7-5, she cruised to a 6-3 second-set win to cancel Ahn's unexpected upset bit.
