Tennis star Naomi Osaka is highest-paid female athlete ever

Serena Williams no longer is the highest-paid female athlete in the world, according to Forbes' Kurt Badenhausen. Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka now owns that title after taking home $37.4 million last year from prize money and endorsements -- $1.4 million more than Williams.

Osaka's total sets a new all-time record for earnings by a female athlete in a single year, beating Maria Sharapova's $29.7 million in 2015. The 22-year-old ranks 29th on Forbes' annual list of the 100 highest-paid athletes while Williams clocked in at No. 33, according to Badenhausen who says the full list will come out next week.

Among Osaka's endorsements includes a $10 million deal with Nike, and various other deals with Yonex, Nissan and Mastercard, among others.

In 2018, Osaka won the U.S. Open defeating Serena Williams and in 2019 won the Australian Open by taking down Petra Kvitová.

Nearly all major tennis tournaments through the month of July have been suspended due to the coronavirus, but the Citi Open, Rogers Cup and U.S. Open are set to get underway in August unless circumstances change.
