We have a couple of very interesting rematches on our hands on Day 3 of the 2023 WTA German Open in Berlin. Bianca Andreescu took just one game against Marketa Vondorousova on clay this year and will try to take her down on grass now. Maria Sakkari and Alize Cornet faced each other literally last week with the result being a shock to many. We also look at Wednesday’s other three matches in a separate article. Who do you think will prevail?

Editor’s Note: Some of these matches are holdovers from a rainy Day 2, but we decided to have another writer give their thoughts on all of them.

WTA Berlin Day 3 Predictions

Elina Avanesyan vs Anna Blinkova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Elina Avanesyan made the fourth round as a lucky loser at the French Open and shocked some extremely dangerous opposition with how smart she played tactically and her ability to put a lot of height on the ball. Will these traits be as vital to her on the grass? That remains to be seen but at least in theory, you could expect her to be overwhelmed from the baseline a lot more. Anna Blinkova is definitely one of the opponents who could already start capitalizing on it.
Prediction: Blinkova in 2

Bianca Andreescu vs Marketa Vondrousova

Head-to-head: Vondrousova 1-0

Marketa Vondrousova beat Bianca Andreescu losing just one game in Rome recently, but that doesn’t mean we have to see a similar score here. Getting the Czech away from clay and her comfort zone could end up being key. Andreescu is coming off a disappointing loss to Viktoria Hruncakova, where she was incredibly unclutch. It’s just hard to imagine Vondrousova’s heavy topspin game clicking on the grass and she does have a 5-11 win/loss record on the surface in her career.
Prediction: Andreescu in 3

Maria Sakkari vs Alize Cornet

Head-to-head: Sakkari 3-1

Maria Sakkari had a flawless record against Alize Cornet until last week when the Frenchwoman took her out in Nottingham. The World No. 8 has had a bit of time to rethink her strategy and try to come up with a better performance in Berlin. Can she actually do it though? While it’s definitely in her range it seems like recently, Cornet really brings her best anytime she plays a high seed. She’s also been great at imposing her craftiness on the grass over the past couple of years.
Prediction: Cornet in 3
