Effortless victory: Relentless Coco Gauff dispatches Emma Raducanu to reach Rome Quarters
IPA

Coco Gauff secures victory against Emma Raducanu and advances to the quarterfinals of the Rome Open. The world No. 3 controlled the match from start to finish, and it only took her one hour and 21 minutes to secure her second victory against the 2021 US Open champion.

This marks Gauff's 18th appearance in the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event and her third time in the Rome Open quarterfinals – after reaching the semifinals on two occasions (2021, 2024). Her next opponent will be the winner between Clara Tauson (22nd seed) and Mirra Andreeva (7th seed).

First Set

It was one of the featured matches of the day at the Foro Italico, with world No. 3 Coco Gauff facing former US Open champion Emma Raducanu. The American was definitely seen as the favorite, especially coming off a final appearance at the Madrid Open and with 7 wins in her last 8 matches on clay courts.

Gauff was precisely the first to strike at the beginning of the match, taking control by securing an early break and moving ahead 3-0. Initially, the Brit didn't seem to fully find her rhythm in the match. The world No. 49 managed to hold her serve for the only time at 3-1, but then Gauff regained dominance, winning the next three games consecutively.

The American totaled 3 aces and won 75% of her first-serve points, while Raducanu had no aces and only 47% of first-serve points won. In any case, the Brit had a couple of break point opportunities in the set, but on both occasions, Gauff came through with authority, taking the set 6-1 in 40 minutes.

Second Set

Gauff's serve remained unplayable at the start of the set, but it seemed that this time Raducanu found her rhythm and held her serve a couple of times, even taking a 2-1 lead. However, the former world No. 10 entered a period of errors in the match, and without Gauff having to do too much on the return, she ended up securing the break that put her ahead again.

From there, Raducanu was unable to compete much longer, appearing a step behind her opponent for much of the match, not only in terms of the score but also in the level of play. The errors cost her dearly, and she surrendered a second consecutive break to the American, who did not falter in closing out the match and finished with a streak of five consecutive games – securing the victory 6-1, 6-2.
