Jack Draper will face French showman Corentin Moutet in the Last 16 of the Rome Open on Tuesday but to do that he will need to banish his inner demons it seems.
Draper obliterated his racquet during his win over Vit Kopriva in what was an uncharacteristic move from the Brit who is not known to lose his temper.
The Brit spoke afterwards and admitted that he does wake up some days and he is angry and that he is getting used to the mental and physical side of the game. Part of that also is getting used to not always getting his own way.
A feeling he saw during his win over Kopriva and one he needs to learn to control before it becomes an issue.
“On certain days, I’m human, we don't always wake up out of bed feeling great. I’m the same, I get out of bed and I feel so angry some days and I’ve got to play a tennis match and I’ve got to lose points," said Draper to Sky Sports.
"I’ve got to go through the emotional ups and downs, even with that going on. It’s taking some getting used to for me from a mental and physical side. I want to keep going but it’s sometimes difficult to always be perfect.”
He is not the only Brit to suffer with this with Andy Murray being a famous example, he said though that it is a weakness to show so much emotion and that he used to shout to combat that.
So a tactic he wouldn't use is breaking racquets but more showing his frustration but not too much as it would show weakness in his view.
"I’ve broken a few rackets in my career, but I’m more of a shouter. On the court is where that side of me comes out." he said to The Telegraph back in 2022.
"Showing too much emotion on the tennis court is seen as a weakness," Murray added.
"The frustration boiled out a little bit too much" ♨️
